A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border on the night of 31 August. The epicentre was located in Kuz Kunar District, Nangarhar Province. Initial reports indicate around 10,000 to 12,000 people affected, approximately 800 people dead, numerous more injured and severe damage to homes in Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman and Nuristan provinces. While assessments are still underway, WFP is starting an immediate food response delivering high-energy biscuits to affected communities. WFP is also dispatching mobile storage units to support logistics. WFP-led UNHAS stands ready to operate additional flights to transport passengers and cargo to and from Jalalabad. This earthquake adds to the series of crises Afghanistan is currently enduring, deepening an already dire humanitarian situation marked by surging malnutrition, forced returnees from Pakistan and Iran, an intensifying drought, and a sharp decline in humanitarian aid due to funding constraints.
